This is the largest sectional sofa we have recovered. And we got to do it twice! It was built for the room, so these makeovers kept it in place with the evolving room design in this Ventnor NJ home.
The First Time
We got a call to reupholster this huge sectional sofa. The room was being repainted and counter laminates updated from black to cranberry.
The original whimsical fabric had met its day - the colors deemed a bit too noisy. Up close, years of family use left a legacy of wear and stains.
After sifting through a small blizzard of fabric samples, the design rested at two. A mosaic pattern from Barrow Fabrics for the cushions, pillows, and backs. The deck and outsides received a faux leather from Charlotte Fabrics. Ninety yards between the two - yes nine-zero (90)! A protective stain-release treatment on the mosaic fabric ensured that spills wouldn't become stains.
The Second Time
Ten years later the house was receiving major renovations - entranceway jackhammered, walls down and up, floors out and in. The sectional had to go: the fabric wrong for the new theme and the sofa in the way. We got a call from the designer.
A twelve foot deep hole greeted us at the main door.
The way to the back door had no floor.
The utility door was too small.
The project super called the designer, "There's an issue getting the sofa out ..."
The designer hurried over and said "Oh!"
We all stood there for a minute looking at each other looking at the hole.
The project super headed off to meet the dumpster truck. The designer got a call.
Feeling abandoned, I edged up to my helper “We came all this way, that f*****g sofa is coming outta there” I nodded at a pile of floor joists, "Maybe the carpenters will let us borrow some of that."
So we screwed together a bridge.
As we finished, the designer texted Gelise, "Your guys are incredible!!!! So impressed!"
The fabric selection was much more orderly this time around - color boards and such. The main fabric was a Crypton treated chenille from Charlotte Fabrics. Accent fabrics from Greenhouse for pop and integration.
It made sense when we saw the striking artwork installed!
